Thurman V. White, Jr. Chairman and CEO
Thurman is responsible for the leadership, vision and values of Progress, as well as driving the firm’s efforts in achieving the operational, financial and strategic goals. He chairs the firm’s Board of Directors, is a member of the Management Committee and serves as a voting member of the Investment Committee.
Thurman joined Progress in 1992 as Chief Operating Officer. Later, Thurman served as Managing Director focusing on product and business development and client retention. Additionally, he managed a private equity fund-of-funds strategy for investment in emerging private equity partnerships. Subsequently, Thurman led the firm’s effort on behalf of CalPERS to manage a $40 million venture capital fund making direct investments in emerging investment management firms. In 2001, Thurman was named President of Progress. In 2004, he led a management buyback of the firm and upon its completion, became Chief Executive Officer. Since the management buyback under Thurman’s leadership, the firm has grown steadily in product breadth, assets under management, expanded employee ownership, and implemented a values-centric leadership model. Prior to joining Progress, Thurman held various leadership positions at state legislative and federal agencies, and in operations management with a Fortune 500 Company.
Thurman holds a J.D. from Boalt Hall, University of California, Berkeley, an M.A. in Communications from Stanford University, and a B.A. in Public and International Affairs from Princeton University. He is a member of the California Bar. Thurman is Chairman of the Investment Committee and a member of the Board of Directors at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, the largest community foundation in the U.S. Since 2013, Thurman has represented Progress as a member of the National Council on Teacher Retirement (NCTR) Corporate Advisory Committee.
